The Countess of Wessex on Style Inspirations Angelina Jolie and Queen Rania

The Countess of Wessex enjoyed a fashion-filled virtual chat today in her role as patron of the London College of Fashion. Sophie spoke to CEO Caroline Rush and Priya Ahluwalia, who has been named as this year’s winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design. Describing her own style as a "work in progress", the Countess added, "It’s developed over time. It’s probably reasonably classic, but I like things with a bit of a twist. I sometimes get a bit braver and then retreat again." Speaking about royal style through the years, she said, "Britain is an island, albeit a big island, and if you look at what royal women have worn over generations they have made huge fashion statements reflected from foreign shores, and that's what helps make our style."

When asked about her own style muses, Sophie mentioned Angelina Jolie. "I always think she looks amazing." In fact, the Academy Award-winning actress and humanitarian graces the cover of Vogue for March in a chic neutral look.

And "Queen Rania of Jordan always looks stunning". Below the Countess and the Queen photographed at a Windsor luncheon in 2012.

The Countess was delighted to present the award on behalf of the Queen to Priya.

The Telegraph reports:

'Speaking in a Zoom webinar hosted by Caroline Rush, the British Fashion Council’s Chief Executive, Sophie congratulated the London-born designer, who is of Nigerian and Indian descent, on her latest collection which was inspired by Yaa Gyasi’s novel, Homegoing. ‘Your autumn/ winter collection is just stuffed full of the most beautiful colours, they are stunning… I wish I was a man,’ said the Countess, adding that she was, ‘coveting’ the patchwork shirt which Ahluwalia was wearing.'

Sophie wore Victoria Beckham's Cabaret dress for the conversation. The dress is described as: "Victoria, Victoria Beckham draws inspiration from the jazz age for this abstract scribble print - look closely to spot the cabaret dancers. Cut from midnight-blue stretch-crepe, this turtleneck dress has a close-fitting bodice and softly pleated skirt."

  1. I love Sophie. She such a hard working dedicated Royal. She’s always smiling and is very relaxed and humble. I think we’ll be seeing much more of her from now on which I’m glad.

  2. Sophie is wonderful at speaking to a group. I hope we see and hear more from her in the future. She looks lovely here.

  3. Css Sophie looks lovely. Nice to see her again.

  4. I have to say that photo of Angelina Jolie on the cover of vogue is amazing what a gorgeous woman.

great video of her for the cover too

nice to hear about sophie always

  5. I think her fashion role models are not really surpising. Rania is regularly high ranking on best dressed lists and Angelina jolie has embraced a classic and feminine business look. I will say though, I don't see that Sophie has really tried to incorporate any of their styles into her own? She had some gorgeous outfits, but is mostly unremarkable and not really fashionable in my opinion. She has a lot of classics but her style doesn't scream elegant classic per se. Which is fine- but she is as far from Angelina Jolie stylewise as most mums. With the only difference that she has actually the resources to go for this look a bit more.
