Crown Princess Mary Opens the UNECE Meeting in Geneva

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark was in Geneva Thursday, where she was joined by Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECE Christian Friis Bach to open the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe review of the status of women's rights in its member states.

It's nearly twenty years since the Beijing Platform for Action conference took place - at the time considered a landmark in the women's rights movement world wide - and it was attended by representatives of 189 countries. The current review is designed to see how the Platform has been implemented in member states.

The conference is titled 'Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls for sustainable development in the UNECE region' and the meeting will be attended by politicians of the member states as well as leaders from the education and business sectors and human rights groups.

Mary looked ready for business in a navy suit and carried her documents in a leather bag, accessorising with a beautiful matching leaf brooch.

  5. Wow, I am blown away by Mary today. Her recent travels to Africa and now attending the UN conference for women's rights really bring to light how much influence royal families can have around the world. On the fashion front, Mary hit all the right notes today, very professional but that brooch added an extra something. I totally agree with Regina, Mary will make an excellent Queen Consort.

    1. I agree with you wholeheartedly Laura from CA. I like that the monarchies highlight issues in small nations that are either lost in the mountain of news items or not covered by the main-stream media. For example, CP Mary's visit to Tajikistan which highlighted among other things the resurgence of polio. Young children are being affected because of not receiving vaccinations. This is also true in other countries too, like Afghanistan. It is frightening to think that disease, polio, is still affecting young child even though a vaccination for it has been around for decades. Truly a shame that the visit of the CP to Tajikistan received little or no coverage.

Thank you Charlotte for this blog as you cover the important aspects of the monarchies' work in you lead in. Good job!
