Stylish Danish Royals Attend Red Cross Dinner

We've often noted how the Danish royal family are perhaps the best at showcasing their finery; certainly the most frequent in terms of tiara and evening gown appearances. Royal fans were in for a treat as the royal family attended the Danish Red Cross 150th anniversary dinner.

Kongehuset

Mary chose a vibrant Hugo Boss one shoulder Grecian-style gown with a statement belt to accentuate her waist. The dress benefited hugely from the belt as it's quite a flowing garment with layers. Queen Margrethe repeated a stunning deep-blue velvet gown with white overlay and Princess Marie looked "very Kate" in a structured navy lace gown.

A great arrival shot.

Crown Prince Frederik was noticeably absent, as he was in London supporting the Invictus Games.

  1. They all look so relaxed and happy :) I'm wishing Kate wasn't under so much scrutiny but, she has done an amazing job of her role as Duchess.

They do look like they are having fun. Thank you Charlotte, for the daily postings. I can't always comment but I read them all. I find the work of the royals (and, yes, the style) inspiring in my daily life at home with young children. I'm reminded to take that extra moment to get those earrings or scarf on and look nice for my young audience.

Thank you so much for your efforts, Charlotte. It ihas been such a lovely treat to have a new post every day this week!!!

Have to say, I don't like that colour much on Mary, not sure I would like it on anyone. Marie is very petite and sometimes looks too girlish, but I really like this "Kate" look on her. Margrethe looks so elegant, her gown has a very interesting and beautiful bodice, and Henrik is such a character - I think he delights in it. They all look wonderfully happy. Not sure who the lady in ruby velvet is -- a local dignitary or someone with the Red Cross, but I like her dress very much.

Glad that Frederik is supporting the games and that even more countries are able to join next year. (Although wish there would be no more wounded soldiers!)

  4. Hi Charlotte,

I can't say I'm a fan of Mary's dress this time, I feel that it clashes so much with the blue's in the Queen's and Princess Marie's dress. I'm not sure what Mary was thinking with this dress, the cut/style is fine but the color, yuk, maybe it looks better in person?! On the plus side, they all looked like they enjoy each other's company.

Hello. Stupid question: I am confused between the 2 Mary and Marie. Who is who??? The one married to crown prince Frederick is mary??? So who is the other 1???

Charlotte may do a post on this, Rose but I'll give a quickie explanation. Mary is the wife of Frederik, the heir. (In spite of the fact, to me, he always looks younger than his brother. They are only a year apart in age.)

Mary is the daughter of a Scottish professor and she is from Tasmania. Frederik met her during the Olympics in Australia and they married in 2004. They have four children including twins. Their eldest child, a son, is the heir following his father. Mary has faced unpleasant press by people who wanted Frederik to marry a Danish girl but has handled herself with dignaty and grace.

Joachim is Frederik's younger brother and Marie is his French second wife. He was first married back in the nineties to Alexandra, British-Hong-Kong. She was lovely and hugely popular and they had two sons. Sadly, the marriage broke up, The Danes handled it much better than the British did with Charles and Diana. (With the benefit of hindsight!) Alexandra was made a countess and still appears at royal events occasionally. She has now remarried.

In 2008, Joachim married Marie. (In the photo, he is standing next to her.) She gets on very well with his colourful and somewhat temperamental father who is also French. They have gone on to have two children, a boy and a girl, making him also the father of four.

I believe Mary is quite popular and has taken on a lot of important work. Marie has too including going on tour when she was pregnant but doesn't seem quite as popular. Hopefully any readers from Denmark can shed more light on this. But the family seems close and happy. The two wives do look a lot alike and have similar names, but Mary is taller than Marie. (And Kate who visited them in Denmark, is taller yet.)

Unlike the British royal family at the moment, the Danish royals almost always appear en masse at royal parties and many other events and are photographed together at summer holidays. Some of the family unity may be to counter-act an awkward situation over a decade ago when Henrik, Queen Margrethe's consort, briefly left Denmark, apparently jealous of Frederik, his eldest son and his wife's heir. (Henrik is the man in the red jacket.) It seems to have blown over now but Henrik remains something of a character.

Just been following the royals for a long time. Perhaps Charlotte can do a wedding feature that will help introduce everyone - not sure if that was in her plans or not. Marie wore a very beautiful dress but Mary's was quite unusual. Not sure how I felt about it.

Is there any way you could cover the Sophie and Edward tour of Canada?
Apparently Sophie is getting really great press over there :-)
    Thanks Simone
