Royal Roundup: King Felipe & Queen Letizia, Royal Babies & Royal Ascot!

Hello-Hello,

We hope you're all enjoying a relaxing Sunday. It's been a busy week for the royals, particularly in Spain, where King Felipe VI's ascension was marked by a low-key ceremony at the Palace of Zarzeula, located on the outskirts of Madrid. Despite the importance of such a prestigious event it was a decidedly intimate family affair.

The elegant Queen Letizia (who has widely been dubbed the world's most stylish Queen by the media) looked on proudly in a white coat dress by her go-to designer Felipe Varela. Letzia was joined by the couple's two daughters Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia.

A romantic moment for the new King and Queen.

In his address the new King pledged to lead a "renovated monarchy for new times". The Spanish monarchy has endured many scandals and negative headlines recently. One cannot help but feel King Juan Carlos' abdication could not have come at a more opportune time. We wish Felipe and Letizia every success in their new roles and have no doubt they will do a stellar job.

It will be interesting to see if her new role changes Letizia's style at all. If her latest public appearance - a meeting with victims of terrorism - offers any indication, it seems the Queen's smart business style comprising of fitted skirt and pants suits is here to stay. It works well for her and she's always appropriately dressed. I do hope we get more insight into her evening wear choices shortly.

Moving on to another enjoyable topic: royal babies! Prince Félix and Princess Claire of Luxembourg took their two-day-old newborn daughter Princess Amalia home the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg last week. The new parents were beaming with happiness as a casually dressed Claire cradled Amalia in her arms.

All eyes were on Princess Charlene of Monaco on Friday as she stepped out for the opening of the Monaco Yacht Club. The Princess is expecting her first baby (rumoured to be twins) and looked radiant in a floaty white dress.

The baby is expected at the end of this year. Exciting times for the couple, whose marriage has been a subject of intense speculation in the media.

Elsewhere in Monaco, new mother Charlotte Casiraghi also visited the Monaco Yacht Club with her partner Gad Elmaleh.

The always stylish Charlotte looked beautiful in the Gucci beach ball print silk halter dress. The turquoise 100% silk dress featured an open back and pleated skirt. It's currently on sale at the Gucci website reduced from $2,800 to $1,400.

One knows summer is well and truly upon us when shades of yellow, lemon and custard are being worn by style icons, celebrities and royals. Queen Maxima has a fabulous daring sense of style and chose a vibrant yellow colour-block dress for the International Consumer Authority Seminar.

Now on to the royal event of the week in Britain: Royal Ascot. Her Majesty was in her element throughout the week, thoroughly enjoying the racing. Her horse 'Estimate' came a very pleasing second in the Ascot Gold Cup. Estimate came first last year much to The Queen's delight.

It's always a treat to see the York sisters choice of headwear (no pretzel hats for Bea).

The Countess of Wessex in a black Emilia Wickstead dress was well and truly immersing herself in the festivities.

Sophie, who celebrated her 15th wedding anniversary with Prince Edward last week, received some terrible news when her race horse Zilber was put down after a freak fall. Apparently the Countess was informed before Trooping the Colour.

Prince Harry attended for the first time.

The royals appeared to have a wonderful time! :)

  1. I love this blog gives good information about all the other royals. The neckline on Letzias coronation outfit, was it jewels or embroidered?

  2. I think it was crystals, but they were in red and yellow, Spain's colors.

    4. LOL. I agree about the bra, bluhare.

And maybe it's me, but I think Felipe and Letizia look more relaxed and are enjoying more PDA.

    1. I agree Esti, it seems the British Royals are more about classic style whereas many European royals really take fashion to the next level..

  7. Ok thank you. I have always liked her style. Here in the USA we mostly hear about the Brits. However I am impressed by her and CP Mary. I need to look at Queen Letzias outfit on something other than my iPhone.

  8. Thanks Charlotte for a great post! I am so loving Felipe and Letizia's PDA's, it' so refreshing to see a royal couple who aren't afraid to show their feelings for one another. And I do love Letizia's style, very similar to the Duchess of Cambridge's except Letizia wears more pants, I wish Kate would as well. However, the satin pants, satin blouse and satin jacket outfit must go, it's just to shiny, it would look more at home in a disco.

Congratulations to Felix, Claire, Albert and Charlene!!! May they all be blessed with easy pregnancies and newborns who love to sleep :).

  9. The best thing about the royals at Ascot for me was everyone looked as though he/she made an effort, without looking as though they stepped out of the pages of Vogue. I thought. Sir Timothy, Princess Anne's husband, looked GQ Prince Phillip always is dashing, but doesn't look well to me. Maybe just so weary from all the activity and ready for a rest.
Hope Princess Charlene does well. Prince Albert looks estatic.
Hope our New Zealand friends check in soon- Anna and kiwi.
    As always, Charlotte, lovely post.

  10. What a terrible experience for Sophie Wessex. And to have to appear in public after that news! That horse was beautiful, but apparently toward the end of a long racing career. Wonder if horses can get osteoporosis?

    1. Hi Marg! How are you doing??, It´s very weird that Anna isn´t around, isn´t it? Another coronation in New Zealand?? Maybe an ornitorrinco??

    2. Sophie looks devastated, understandably so. You triggered me to read up on equine osteoporosis Marg, have a look here: http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vorl/research_programs/musculoskeletal_disease_injuries/silicosis.cfm

Such wonderful photos here!! Thank you, Charlotte. I love Letizia's white suit but not that shiny pants suit. Those photos of the Spanish couple are so romantic, especially because there were some nasty rumours about them last year. The British royal family isn't the only one to have issues with the press. I hope the royal couple find support with each other and stand strong with the many challenges they will have to face. Their little girls are precious, I hope the future of the Spanish monarchy!

Charlene is always elegant but she looks so pretty here, more relaxed and with a softer hairdo. I suspect they have waited long for this moment and hope her pregnancy is smooth. Charlotte looks very dashing in her dress! A bit daring for my taste but it suits her. She reminds me so much of her mother, very lovely.

More lovely photos of the Luxembourg royal couple and little Amalia. They are a very handsome family.

The queen looked marvelous as Ascot, only wish Estimate could have won again but she did very well. Poor Sophie though, what awful news when your hopes are high. That is the part of horse racing I find so difficult. At least horses broke down at Ascot. Such a sad thing.

Anne's coat would be better for evening I think but it's wonderful to see her with her family.

Didn't understand Eugenie's trench coat as the weather was quite lovely but Beatrice looked very nice.

I was thrilled to see Harry at Ascot. Hope Kate and William make it there someday.

On Daily Mail and OSS saw photos of Princess Haya of Jordan who has always been a favourite of mine as she has done so much and lost her mum so young. Generally she wears the most amazing hats to Ascot with great flair but this was not her best year fashion wise.

  12. What a great post Charlotte! I adore that photo of the royal family and baby of Luxembourg. They are such an attractive couple. I also love Charlotte Casiraghi she looks beautiful and I'm so happy for her and her baby boy. She looks amazing. Congratulations to the royal family of Spain. I was not a fan of the king but sure hope his son and his gorgeous wife make a better king and queen.
