Royal Roundup: The Royals at Sochi

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia kicked off with the most expensive opening ceremony in the history of the games (despite the expense, those of you who watched or followed news coverage will have noted the fifth ring not lighting) and certainly, it was a visual treat.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have been busy supporting the Dutch team with several appearances over the weekend including this photo op at Olympic Village.

The royal opted to cycle around Olympic Village. Máxima was wearing high-heeled ankle boots, no mean feat, us ladies will agree :)

The Princess Royal is representing the British Royal Family and was welcomed upon arrival at the International College of Economics and Finance in Moscow. Princess Anne has such a fine sporting history herself, no doubt she will relish her role at the games.

Flying the flag for Monaco, former Olympians Prince Albert and Princess Charlene were photographed enjoying the ceremonies. They're attending various events too, including skiing at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Center.

His Royal Highness The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, in his capacity as member of the International Olympic Committee, has been attending various events with Prince Felix.

Best of luck to all the participating teams! Are you following the games?

I've turned into a big Maxima fan thanks to you, Charlotte. That zinger she threw at Hollande is the best!

I know Anne works her butt off, but I wish she'd hire me as her stylist.

PS You need to plug this blog on Duchess Kate. Not just the blurb on the side, but a post from you saying there's a new one up.

    1. Count me in as a major Máxima fan!

Thank you so much for your supportive comments. I've made a plan in terms of how much I want to achieve in number of posts, quality of posts etc If I stick to my plan and feel it's going well I will definitely give it a big mention over at Duchess Kate. I recall when I began blogging about Kate, a fellow blogger told me to expect nothing for six months and slowly but surely readership would come (if the blog was good).

I am very much enjoying wring it thus far, and thank you so much for reading :)

    2. And bluhare, I couldn't agree more about Anne's hair. It's a very harsh and dated look on her.

  2. I really admire Willem-Alexander and Maxima. They certainly appear to be very much in love, and united as a royal couple. Something tells me she would be great fun to have lunch with! :)

  3. I know Charlene was an Olympic swimmer. Was Albert also an Olympian? I noticed you referred to them in the plural as Olympians.

    1. Hello,

Albert was indeed, he participated in bobsleigh at the Winter Olympic Games in Calgary in 1988.

      Thank you all for reading!

  4. Yes, Charlotte, I am following your blog. It is a real treat for us that you cover more royals then Kate in your indepth, yet fresh and understable style.
I also follow the olympic games. The last hour of the opening ceremony was like a dream with the star-sportsmen in mid-air, and the view of the olympic city with the fireworks.
All I still have to find out is who is that handsome luxembourgish sportsmen. He caught my eyes on the opening ceremony also.
    Have a nice day, Emese

  5. Did you catch the snap of Anne browsing her novel during the opening ceremony? I thought that was brilliant. Wonder if her mum had anything to say about it - representing the British etc etc :) It isnt too unreasonable to say there must be boring bits in a ceremony 3 hours long but it's classic that she was caught on camera. :)

  7. Great post. I love seeing the royals there especial the Dutch king and queen. Their enthusiasm during the women's 3000m when their countrywoman won GOLD was infectious. I'm sure she will never forget that moment! I'm loving these Olympics. Shame politics have gotten in the way of the games.

  8. Woops. Bluhare, that was Mathilde of Belgium that made that remark. I love Mathilde. She is a class act. I believe she was a speech therapist before her marriage and worked with children. She took to royal life quickly and she is the first queen to be Belgium born. I thought she looked fantastic in that pink coat -although the bow was a bit much.

As for the remark, methinks the lady was not completely amused by Hollande's record with his ladies. Delightful to see a royal who isn't afraid to speak her mind. What a great remark!

On the subject of ladies who speak their mind, it's wonderful to see Anne at Stoki. I loved her suit. She really deserves much more attention. I looked at the court circular in Majesty which isn't complete and she had engagments almost every day, many with her carer patronage from January 7. She really has her parents' work ethic, yet we hear almost nothing about her.

I think you're doing a fantastic job with this blog Chatlotte and I hope the Duchess Kate crowd soon finds their way here as there is so much of interest and great fashion and jewel features. Maybe you could find a giveaway for this blog. That certainly brings the numbers in although a lot of those may be transiant. Whatever happens, I hope it is a great success for it deserves to be.

I would like to echo those you commend you on this new blog, Charlotte. I was surprised to see so many new posts - thank you ! Most welcome, I can tell you that.

Count me in among the Max and Willem fans. Now that is a couple genuinely besotted with each other and a truly beautiful partnership. You can see that there is tremendous love and mutual respect for each other simply in their glances. I suspect that is a genuinely problem-free and happy marriage. Max is sharp as a tack - she was an investment banker, speaks multiple languages, mother of three and multi-tasks like a hero. A true modern woman. Love her.

As for Anne reading her novel - maybe she was caught up in a most interesting part. There have been days when I have spent hours staring at the computer, yet wishing each minute that I could finish my book. So I don't blame her for sneaking a look. I bet I would have done the same :)
