Latest News: Princess Madeleine Gives Birth in New York

Congratulations are very much in order for Sweden's Princess Madeleine and her husband Chris O'Neill. Madeleine gave birth to a baby girl on February 20, 2014 at 10.41 pm local time New York. Chris was present for the birth, which took place at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornwall Medical Center. Below we the brief official statement from Sweden's official Royal Family website.

Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine, who turns 32 in June, is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. She became engaged to Christopher O'Neill in late 2012 and the couple married in June 2013. Both mother and baby are believed to be doing well at the moment. The Princess shared a photo via her Facebook page thanking supporters for "sending so much positive energy" during her pregnancy.

Royal court spokeswoman Annika Sonnerberg revealed the family have been informed:

"Everything went well. The mother and child are doing well. The King and Queen who are in Stockholm, have been told of the birth of their newest grandchild. Victoria has also been informed. But exactly what the royal family plans to do, whether they will travel to the US or not, remains unclear."

Royal expert Roger Lundgren doesn't believe the hype will be as intense for Madeleine's daughter as it was when Crown Princess Victoria gave birth to Estelle:

"Because Estelle has a prominent place in the line of succession and will in all likelihood be queen someday, that's obviously much much bigger. Right now we don't even know what title or position Madeleine's daughter will have in the Royal Family."

According to the rules of succession, a king or queen in Sweden must be raised in the kingdom, be protestant, and is not allowed to marry without the King's permission. Princess Madeleine's child would be unable to ascend to the Swedish throne if she doesn't grow up in Sweden and/or is raised a Catholic, her father's religion.

  4. I'm very impressed with Chris. I watched a video of him speaking to the press at the hospital and he was so happy to share his joy, just as he did on their wedding day. So nice to see! Madeleine is one lucky lady and she deserves to be happy.

  5. I am so happy for this beautiful woman. So does Sweden allow dual citizenship or will the child have to relinquish their American citizenship?

I hope someone knows the answer to this. I'm British, have not got my American citizenship as I would have to renounce my British citizenship. At least that's what I was told when I wanted dual citizenship, but people at Immigration don't always know what they're talking about.

    2. bluhare, did you try the US Immigration website? It may be more reliable than a phone call. (Depending on someone's training/knowledge, etc.)

  9. Wow! This is so exciting. Another royal baby. It's really an exciting part of motherhood to give birth to a lovely baby. What makes this more exciting is that we know that the child is born into royalty. Congratulations to them!
