Royal Roundup: Albert & Charlene + Another Royal Wedding!

We're back with this week's Royal Roundup looking at all the latest news from Monaco. It's been quite a busy time for Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert and Princess Charlene. Today they met with Monaco's team for the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 during a presentation at Metropole Hotel in Monte Carlo. No doubt it was a special event for the royals who are both former Olympians.

Albert and Charlene looked very close (even putting on a public display of affection or two) as they joined in the national celebrations of their patron saint, Sainte Dévote. The couple left Monaco cathedral arm-in-arm after the service, chatted privately and shared jokes on the balcony. We do love a little royal PDA here at The Royal Digest... :)

There's a fascinating legend about the saint you may not have heard of. It is said Christians put the body of Sainte Dévote - a fourth century Christian martyr - in a boat to Africa in hope that once it reached land she would receive a Christian burial. A dove flew from her mouth and guided the boat to Monaco, and since then she has watched over the principality.

Charlene selected an ensemble by her go-to brand Akris; a herringbone jacket and matching pencil skirt from the Fall 2013 Collection with a grey cashmere turtleneck and Dior pumps. What did you think of this look?

In keeping with the tradition we mentioned above Their Serene Highnesses burnt a boat in front of the Sainte Dévote Church. Charlene kept warm in a black Akris coat and black thigh-high boots. It was great to see the Princess taking part in the festivities, as she missed last years due to illness.

Princess Charlene celebrated her 36th birthday on January 25, and as part of the celebrations which aimed to share more about Charlene's background with the Monegasque people, she attended the presentation of the book KZN, Land of Dreams, which she prefaced. The bilingual book is written in English and French. I liked her white peplum Akris suit; very stylish and crisp.

Next up, a new official portrait of the princely couple has been released by the palace. Charlene looks very chic in blonde, and the entire look is reminiscent of a Hitchcockian blonde (including her late mother-in-law, the eternally beautifully Grace Kelly, later Princess Grace of Monaco).

Moving on to wedding news (and oh yes, we do love weddings!). After their civil wedding in Monaco, Andrea Casiraghi and Tatiana Santo Domingo are planning a religious celebration of their marriage in a luxurious Swiss resort.

More from Hello!:

"With the stunning backdrop of the snowy peaks of Gstaad, their guests will enjoy a weekend of celebrations, with some arriving from January 29. Some 300 family and friends are expected, with the guests of honour being the couple's ten-month-old son Sacha, Andrea's mother Princess Caroline and sister Charlotte Casiraghi.
In keeping with Tatiana's romantic vision, she will walk down an aisle lined with hundreds of white roses to the strains of Ave Maria, played on a 19th-century organ.
The bride will make her entrance on the arm of her brother Julio Mario Santo Domingo. Normally known for her hippy chic style, the mother of one is thought to have opted for a more formal choice for her second wedding gown. She has reportedly commissioned Valentino for one of his fairytale designs.
With their vows exchanged, the couple will leave for a wedding dinner at the Palace hotel in a horse-drawn carriage, wrapped in white furs."

I expect more details will emerge shortly!

  1. Ohhh, Charlotte :) I wish I could agree about this couple looking close or being (genuinely) affectionate. Whenever I look at a whole series of photos from their joint engagements, in most of them Charlene looks so sad and Albert almost looks irritated by her presence. There are exceptions, but I suspect that is when they make a conscious effort to give the photographers *something* to work with. Even their latest formal portrait (one they picked as being "the best", I presume) appears to be anything but a portrait of married bliss. (All IMO of course! :)

I would not trade places with Charlene for all the sun in Monaco.

    1. I do agree with you, Royalfan. She seems so often sad, and lost in her own thoughts. She seems to be playing a part.
And I'm still wondering why after so many years in Monaco, she can't speak French, yet.
Thanks a lot , Charlotte for your excellent (in so many ways) blogs.

    2. Yes, Royalfan, I do agree with you. Most often, she seems so sad, lost in her own thoughts.

I do really like Charlene's style. IFor years before her wedding she has been dressing well. She knows fashion, she knows what suits her and she knows how to look well put together without coming off as a lightweight. She almost always wears heavier fabrics - I think that helps.
Although, I have to say, I feel that her recent forays into cosmetic surgery have left her face almost mutilated. She looked so beautiful at her wedding and then the next operation she did put years and years on her face. Part of me thinks that was part of the 'deal', even.. to look older. Poor woman. What a life. What a truly wretched life.

  4. I love Charlotte's style; she has sublime taste. I would die for her clothes. She has worked hard and done a beautiful job as princess but, like the others here, I don't understand the lack of animation in her face. Is it really sadness? Plastic surgery? (I think Portia is right and she has had some but she was so pretty before, I can't imagine why.) Is this a persona she is trying to put on?

So many other royal ladies, Kate, Diana, Madeleine, Mary and Marie are famous for their dazzling smiles. Charlene looked so beautiful in the past when she looked truly happy - I remember photos of her blowing out candles on a cake before she was married. A lovely, athletic fresh girl. I hope she works through whatever is causing this restraint and shows us a glowing Charlene one day.

  7. Just curious - heard in t.v. program that Queen E. doesn't like Kate's short dresses and that she should wear more royal jewels, tiaras, etc. She offered to send her stylist over to help Kate out.
Any truth to this. Caroline Grace

We can't know for sure, however details from the original story have already been proven false.
