Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie drove through Berlin in a Mini yesterday as they launched the Great Campaign, promoting Britain in Germany. The Princesses are following in their father's footsteps by working as Trade Ambassadors for the UK. It had been reported the York sisters were planning careers away from the monarchy due to the Queen and Prince Charles's wish to have a slimmed down monarchy (Beatrice is currently on leave from her job with a London venture capital firm). However, this is considered Beatrice and Eugenie's first major engagement, in their own right and has sparked rumours they plan to become full-time royals.

22-year-old Princess Eugenie took to the wheel with the car emblazoned with the Union Flag and drove the short distance to the British Embassy. During the short and very public drive Eugenie ran a red light, I suspect there won't be a fine though.

Next the sisters visited the
Berlin British School in the German capital. During the visit a young student questioned Beatrice about the unforgettable Philip Treacy hat she wore the royal wedding in 2011. She revealed she had not seen the creation before the wedding and admitted it was very difficult to wear.

A spokeswoman for the school said: "They were friendly, very natural with the children, and seemed happy to answer questions."

Beatrice and Eugenie viewed online retailer
Zalando's website during a visit to the British company's offices. Zalando has already set up in London's Tech City and the Princesses were eager to learn more about the e-commerce site.

Speaking of fashion, didn't they both look incredibly chic? They have both undergone quite the style transformation over the last couple of years and yesterday they both supported British fashion. Princess Beatrice wore a Burberry coat with a green Johnathan Saunders Fall 2012 dress.

The
Sigrid Silk and Wool-Blend Dress is currently available at
Net-A-Porter. The fit and flare mélange silk is a striking piece and looks particularly stylish when teamed with a belt as Beatrice has done. The Princess completed the look with a pair of
Kurt Geiger shoes.

Thanks for sharing! I was seriously surprised to see them in an official engagement, let alone a solo one. Makes one wonder what this is leading up to...?
ReplyDeleteThanks Charlotte for this post! I have already seen some photos of the visit and was wondering about the brand of Beatrice's dress!
ReplyDeleteHey also visited Hannover today as Herrenhausen Palace was rebuilt and re-opened today. Their hanoverian ancestors lived in this palace. Unfortunately, I could'nt make it to Hannover, although it's just a 2h drive from where I come from (Wolfenbüttel, that's where the Jägermeister comes from), but I'm studying somewhere else, so I could'nt make it.
Hopefully there'll be another Royal Visit someday!
Best wishes!
Thank you Jenna, very interesting information I will certainly include in the next post. I'm sorry you couldn't make it but I'm sure you will see royals in the future :)
DeleteI was wondering if you were going to post about these two, and I'm glad you did! I really think Princess Beatrice looked really nice but Eugenie looked frompy in her jacket. Great Post!
ReplyDeleteFirst off I want to state that I have nothing against the Princesses. In my opinion I think all this is coming from thier daddy Prince Andrew. He can not stand that the beautiful Duchess of Cambridge get's all the attention in the royal family now. And since the Duchess has been ill with her pregnancy andrew is trying to take advanage of her down time. There is no way that the Queen nor Charles are goign allow these two sisters become full time working royals. They are trying to cut back because of the cost. Andrew does not like the idea that his girls protection officers have been cut unless they are on "offical duty".
ReplyDeleteI think it was Andrew that put his girls up to this trip. And it is really funny that they are "Trade Embassadors for the UK." This was taken away from their dad and given to William and his Duchess. There has been no offical announcement of their involement from the Palace. I really feel sorryfor these two girls. All they are, are a puppet on a string and their daddy is pulling the strings. So I think the girls need to go back to their day jobs and working with their charities. They will never be full time working royals. And you don;t have to be a royal to work with charities. They do do a good job with the charities they have.
Once the Duchess is feeling better, she & William will be back to doing what they do best, representing the UK with style.
Pauline, would you mind elaborating on Will+Kate being "Trade Ambassadors for the UK"? I thought that was still technically Andrew's title (unless he lost it after the outcry about his involvement with that sketchy American businessman).
Delete-Sarah
Pauline, I share your opinion.
DeleteI totally agree!
DeleteHi Sarah from GA- When the Duke & Duchess returned from their trip to Canada/California it was announced that the Queen has taken away the Trade Embassador from Andrew and gave it to William & Catherine. I guess Andrew had cause some embarassment to the family with some of the things he had done and people he was doing business with and being friends with.
DeleteIf you remember during the Duke & Duchess's trip to California they attened a trade engagement.
Hope this helps.
Thank you Charlotte! This was a lovely post :)
ReplyDeleteFirst, the shallower things - I LOVE Beatrice's green dress, although I wonder that she wasn't cold outside!! And her coat outside the minicar reminds me a lot of the one that Kate wore to meet with the football players last winter. Eugenie is very pretty as well :)
I think it will be really interesting to see what happens with Beatrice and Eugenie in the future. My guess is that they will probably lead relatively normal lives with regular jobs, lose the full-time security, and maybe help out with the occasional royal cause or two, as they are now. I don't think they'll ever be full-time royals, but I don't think they'll be kicked out altogether - Charles is going to need somebody to help run the monarchy, as William/Kate/Harry can't be expected to take on the entire load of work that's being done right now not only by the Queen and her children, but also her cousins in the background. That's kind of where I see Beatrice and Eugenie going - quietly helping out with their charities and otherwise, being relatively out of the spotlight. I think the main reason they get attention now is that they're young and fashionable (minus some questionable hat choices!) and still relatively close to the throne. As the Cambridges' (and probably Harry)'s lives and families develop, they'll be shifted farther and farther to the periphery.
I'm really glad to hear that Beatrice has a full time job (and Eugenie just graduated from university) - I hope we see a (semi)royal wedding from Beatrice and Dave Clark soon! I feel like these two girls have had to put up with a LOT of criticism because of their parents, which they have no control over, and I really like seeing them come onto their own. :)

Ohhhhh I love that car! I have recently run the same red light a couple of times. I was under a lot of pressure at the time, as were the girls. Fortunately the cop just chewed me out and I didn't get a ticket.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to the young ladies! They both look lovely with the Ambassador and his wife.
Thank you Charlotte I have wondered what they were up to.
Is one of them engaged?
Hello Sarah,
DeleteThey're not engaged yet but I predict an announcement from Beatrice and her boyfriend Dave this year :)
The two girls are said to be sweet, fun and well brought up, but this is just ridiculous. They have absolutely no credentials for this sort of thing. The Countess of Wessex, who worked and had her own firm before she married, would have been a much better choice, if necessary. But British trade probably didn't ask for anything, this is certainly Prince Andrew pulling the strings, probably out of jealousy and because he was asked to step down because he took advantage of his situation. He should let his daughters work like Princess Anne's children, and exist by themselves. Absurd and pathetic ! Although I am sure they are very nice, they should stand on their own two feet, not hang on to the apron-strings of their grandmother.
ReplyDeleteI think Bea and Eugenie represent UK with style and dignity. Why they can not become full time working royals? In my opinion they are as good as Duchess of Cambridge. Bea's speech was presented with such poise! They are both warm and natural and look quite good!.Why there is so much prejudice against them? It is not their fault that their father is Prince Andrew.
ReplyDeleteSorry for my mistakes but English is not my native language:).

DeleteI do agree that Beatrice and Eugenie appear to be warm and natural young women. The criticism of them (and all this is in my opinion), stems from their parents. For many years they were seen to travel more in Sarah's social circle which didn't do them any favors and undermined their royal titles. This life style contributed greatly to the criticism of the cost of their protection. And when William and Kate got engaged, it made B & E less "significant" and I really believe that both of their parents resented this, along with Kate's appeal. It reminded me of when Diana appeared on the scene.
It is a question of their position in the succession to the throne.
DeleteAt present they are 5th and 6th, but when the baby is born they will be 6th and 7th-- under the new rules Princess Eugenie will then not even have to ask the Queen's permission to marry---only the first 6 will have to do that in future, and they will go further down the succession with any more children William or Harry have.
It really isn't to do with who their parents are---just to trim things to the direct line.
Thank you for explaining such complicated issues as their position in the succession to the throne, but I still think these two ladies have great potential. But maybe it's better they support The Queen only from time to time because they have full time jobs. I've read in one of the English newspapers that Bea works in a venture capital firm.
DeleteThank you ,amazing post, the sisters are so cute!
ReplyDeleteThey seem to take their style cues right from the Duchess herself...both look like "Repli-Kates", just like so many of us commoners. How royally ironic. The outfits are lovely, however. No doubt, Kate would rock these... Thank you for the coverage!
ReplyDeleteEugenie looks absolutely stunning in the last picture! So mature
ReplyDeleteI think Beatrice and Eugenie have been put forward because the Duchess of Cambridge has made it clear she isn't taking on many engagements in the near future. Andrew no doubt pushed for it, the queen is very fond of them and Sophy is heavily booked already. They bring young blood in, are more natural than Kate and it's probably temporary so why not.
DeleteCharlotte, please if you could give Prince Harry a post on this blog. I so appreciate all of our service men. He is almost exactly like my 2nd son personality wise (yes challanging!) and just now coming home from Afghanistan.
ReplyDeleteHello Sarah,
DeleteYou read my mind, I'm writing one as we speak :)
Thank you ;) Looking forward to that.
DeleteSarha- Did you just post that your son was in Afghanistan? If so thank him for his service to his country. And Welcome home your son & Prince Harry.
