Latest Royal News From Spain + Princess Letizia's Best Looks

This evening we're taking our first look at the latest news from the Spanish royal family beginning with Pascua Militar (the Military Easter) the annual New Year's military ceremony.

The ceremony is held every January 6 in the Throne Room in the Palace of Madrid. King Carlos III established this ceremony on the occasion of the reconquest of Minorca from Britain, made by a Spanish-French Armada of 52 ships in 1782 and Spanish Marine forces. Each year the King of Spain receives the Prime Minister, the leaders of the General Staff of the Defence of three armies, of the Royal and Military Order of San Fernando and San Hermenegildo, the Civil Guard and the Veterans Brotherhood.

In his speech, King Juan Carlos stressed that the National Defence Policy:

"Recognises that the current economic crisis acts as a security threat and therefore it is essential to prioritize the effort to maintain military capabilities to ensure credible deterrence in the defence of the interests of Spain."

Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia wore traditional dress for the event, which is basically a long skirt and fitted jacket. Letizia is considered one of the top style icons among the royal ladies, but I'm not entirely sure about this outfit. The detail on the jacket is striking but the top underneath doesn't really compliment the entire look. What do you think?

For those of you who are not particularly familiar with Princess Letizia's style, I thought I would share a selection of her best looks from 2012 beginning with this sparkling LBD (Little Black Dress) she wore to the "Woman Today" ceremony which honours the most outstanding women of 2012.

Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia at the royal wedding of HRH the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and Stéphanie De Lannoy. Letizia looked regal and I rather liked her choice of hat.

Letizia's clothes are generally very well tailored and this adds a chic, sophisticated look to event the simplest pieces. Below we see the Princess wearing a skirt suit at National Day 2012.

Looking forward to seeing Letizia's choices this year :)

  1. I don´t think she is an fashion icon. Sometimes she looks stunning, other times not so much like in the Pascua militar. Like I´m portuguese, the royal family that we know the most of is the spanish. Inclusively the royal family is very close with our Republic President. Letizia and Felipe came to a official visit to Portugal in May/2012 and in the gala dinner she was gorgeous (in my opinion). You can take a look here: http://www.tvi24.iol.pt/fotos/1/245978

  3. Letizia's fashion choices are interesting for me - she'll usually go with something business casual and not too stand-outish, and then out of nowhere she'll pull out something amazing like this

She was a reporter before she met and married Felipe, and I always thought it was interesting that their relationship was kept almost completely secret until the day the engagement was announced. Also loved that in their engagement interview Felipe explained that he had chosen Letizia not only because he loved her but because he knew she would make a good queen for Spain :)

    2. That is accurate information, Sarah. As I'm portuguese, I've always read a lot about the spanish royal family. I like Letizia's profile and style.
Plus: Letizia is very intelligent, stylish and has a strong personality. And somehow she broke tradition in the royal family, before the wedding: not only she was not royal or aristocratic, she was a 31 year old journalist... and she was divorced. (At 24 she married her university teacher, and they divorced one year later.) The King of Spain did'nt accept quite well these facts, but their love and strong will of Prince Felipe won, and they married with the blessing of the Queen and King. :)
She has a superb style, her husband is very, very charming and handsome, and their two little girls (Leonor and Sofia) are adorable!
      Thank you, Charlotte.

  4. She is one of my favorite royals, always appropriate, never dresses over the top, formal or casual. She is very tiny and understands what works for her scale. Absolutely loved her suit for the Luxemborg wedding, the fabric was sensational and the hat was perfect! unfortunately as much as I usually admire Sophie, Duchess of Wessex, her dress looked out of place at the wedding and not as elegant as she usually looks...

  6. I tend to like outfits with more color than this one, but for some reason I really like this. Perhaps it is the detailing with how well it fits/is tailored.

I really like the whole look in the pictures of them at the wedding. They both look very sharp.
Charlotte I love that hat too. I'm working on trying to be more brave wearing hats out. I think they are fun and give an outfit that last little sparkle. (provided its a nice hat!)
    The throne room is beautiful.

  11. She's actually not really known for being a fashion icon, and frequently he choices are a bit dull and criticized in royal blog circles. She is a pretty ok dresses most of the time, but IMO often a bit underdressed for occasions. Sweet, pretty, nice dresses yes, fashiona icon, no way

  12. Princess Letizia is gorgeous... She is one of the most beautiful princesses of this generation... very intelligent, smart, has a strong personality and hardworking. I think she is doing a great job in her royal functions. The Prince was indeed right for saying that she will be a good princess for Spain. I like her style, her choices of dresses and she is really stunning.
